On Wednesday, September 19, each awardee company has been scheduled for a one-on-one meeting with an NSF program director. These “one-on-one” meetings are a confidential opportunity to discuss your Phase I project progress and Phase II proposal plans with NSF. This schedule is not changeable, and participation in the one-on-one meeting is a required component of your Phase I award.

These meetings are only 20 minutes in length, so please be on time for your appointment.

Guidelines

One-on-one meetings provide an opportunity to discuss commercialization progress you have made and issues you are facing in taking your technology to market. Please note that technical progress is not the main and only focus of one-on-one meetings. Any significant technology updates should be conveyed via email to your program director prior to the Phase I Grantee Workshop. If there is a particularly difficult or sensitive issue that you would like your program director to consider prior to your one-on-one meeting, please contact him/her via email at least 1 week before the conference. Topics suitable for discussion during a one-on-one meeting include:

* Specific questions regarding the Phase II application process that were not addressed in general sessions

* Any expected delay in finishing your project

* Update on your efforts to establish strategic partnerships

* Financial issues being faced in bringing the technology to market

* IP issues/concerns

* Concerns about shifting market dynamics or emerging competitive threats

* Team/personnel issues

* Any other “nontechnology” issue being faced by your company

Commercial Assistance Planning

NSF contracts with two different organizations to provide assistance to our new Phase I awardees with their commercialization efforts and preparing their Phase II proposal. These organizations, Dawnbreaker and Larta, Inc., have extensive experience working with small businesses developing commercialization strategies and plans. This service is optional, and the fee is covered directly by NSF to Dawnbreaker or Larta for each awardee that takes advantage of their services. Commercial Assistance Planning (CAP) assignments are made randomly for all new awards. You should have received your CAP assignment and additional details in mid-July via email from Kevin Brogan. If you cannot locate that email, contact [email protected] with your Phase I award number.

Dawnbreaker and Larta should have reached out to their assigned awardees in late July to initiate participation in their programs. Both organizations will attend the Phase I Workshop in September and schedule their own one-on-one meetings with all companies that register for their services for Wednesday, September 19. The CAP contractors will not schedule their meetings until the NSF one-on-one schedule is published, to ensure no conflicts.
